These ten questions cover the areas that most often separate organizations with strong technology leadership from those that struggle: strategy and ownership, IT spending, vendor management, risk and compliance, incident readiness, documentation and automation. Answer honestly; "not sure" counts as no. A lower score is not a failure. It shows where a fractional CIO, a GRC assessment or a process review would have the biggest impact.

  1. Does someone on your leadership team own technology strategy?
  2. Do you have a written technology roadmap for the next 12 months or more?
  3. Can you explain what you spend on technology each year, and why?
  4. Do you review vendor contracts and renewals before they auto-renew?
  5. Do you have a current, documented risk assessment?
  6. Are your IT and security policies reviewed at least once a year?
  7. Could you produce evidence of your security controls within a week?
  8. Do you have a tested incident response and backup recovery plan?
  9. Are critical processes documented well enough for someone new to follow?
  10. Is all critical work off spreadsheets, paper and email chains?
